Activities
Kelly Dempsey, lead instructional technologist, and Abby Grace Drake, visiting assistant professor of biology, gave two presentations at the Educause Learning Initiative Feb. 9-12 in Anaheim, Calif. The sessions were titled 鈥淎 Math Class Flips over Blended, Team-Based Learning,鈥� and described the redesign of Math 100, which has evolved from a lecture format to a team-based approach that features interactive lectures, team applications, and pre-recorded and posted lectures.
David Read, lecturer, Department of Computer Science, gave an invited talk Feb. 7 at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Security Control Oversight and Update Training Conference. In a session titled 鈥淲eb Application Security: Frameworks, Scanners and Testing Tools,鈥� he walked the security and software development leaders for the various government contractors through the variety of web-borne attacks that are escalating and provided overviews and demonstrations of tools and techniques for mitigating each.
Publications, Performances & Exhibitions
Evan Mack, visiting assistant professor of music, conducted an abbreviated version of his 2011 opera titled Angel of the Amazon, about the life of the late Sister Dorothy Stang, Feb. 12 at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, Calif., Stang鈥檚 alma mater. A member of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, Stang was 73 when she was murdered Feb. 5, 2005, in Brazil. She had spent nearly 40 years there as an advocate for indigenous people and the rainforest. Mack鈥檚 production was part of a weeklong celebration of Stang鈥檚 life and work.
David Miller, professor emeritus of art, is one of three artists whose work will be featured in 鈥淢atter of Form鈥� scheduled Feb. 21 to March 29 at the Laffer Gallery 96 Broad St., Schuylerville. An opening reception is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 21. For information, please email the gallery.
Jay Rogoff, visiting assistant professor of English, has published an article, "The Mixologist: Painter Anne Diggory's Photo Fusions," in Adirondack Life, Vol. 42, No. 2 (March/April 2015), and "Family Outings at Jacob's Pillow," an essay-review of performances by Ballet 2014 and Pacific Northwest Ballet, in The Hopkins Review, Vol. 8, No. 1 (Winter 2015). "City Ballet Summer," his report on the New York City Ballet's summer 2014 season at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and "Hot Diggity," his review of the Bolshoi Ballet's Don Quixote at SPAC, appear in Ballet Review, Vol. 42, No. 4 (Winter 2014-15). a detailed review by Mary Jablonski of Venera, Rogoff's most recent poetry collection, has appeared in the online journal Numero Cinq, Vol. 6, No. 2 (February 2015).
