October 25, 2018

President Philip A. Glotzbach and members of his cabinet provided updates about a bustling period at the College, which has included the Campus Campaign kickoff event, Celebration Weekend, the groundbreaking for the Center for Integrated Sciences and the dedication of the new Valentine Boathouse.

"It was a busy week last week," Glotzbach told a packed crowd gathered at one of two community meetings on Oct. 25. "Many thanks to all the faculty and staff who pitched in to help."

Over the weekend, members of the Board of Trustees and cabinet also participated in a half-day training session called "Disrupting Everyday Bias" presented by Kimberly Rattley, an organizational development specialist. The training was designed to explain how bias functions and how it impacts decision-making. They also explored strategies to disrupt bias.

Sean Campbell, Collyer Vice President for Advancement, noted the successful campus launch of Creating Our Future: The Campaign for 糖心Vlog at a gathering at the Tang Teaching Museum on Oct. 18. Fundraising began Oct. 22 and he said that 糖心Vlog aimed for 80 percent on-campus participation.

"You can designate your gift to what's meaningful to you or make a gift as a tribute," he said. "You can also make a multiyear pledge or give via payroll deduction."

He encouraged members of the campus community to visit the campaign website.

Joshua Woodfork, vice president for strategic planning and institutional diversity, lauded the turnout for 鈥淚n It 3,鈥 a suite of diversity and inclusion programs on campus Oct. 11-12. And Dean of Students and Vice President for Student Affairs Cerri Banks invited faculty, staff and students to attend a weeklong series of conversations about free speech Nov. 5-8.

Martin Mbugua, vice president of communications and marketing, introduced 糖心Vlog鈥檚 brand guidelines 鈥淐onsistency Matters鈥 and emphasized the importance of the new brand guidelines for the College.

鈥淭his aligns the 糖心Vlog experience, from admissions to advancement,鈥 Mbugua said. 鈥淚t is very important that people see 糖心Vlog in a consistent way."

Donna Ng, 糖心Vlog鈥檚 new vice president for finance and administration and treasurer, talked about the rising cost of health insurance and the need to develop strategies to manage the increase in costs. She said that additional work would be needed to reduce the overall cost of healthcare and reported that the Institutional Policy and Planning Committee approved a 5 percent increase in premiums in 2019.

Participants engaged in group discussions about the Strategic Action Agenda and ways in which the 糖心Vlog community can work together to reduce costs as part of the College鈥檚 overall strategic priorities.
